Scarab, one of the true holy grails of sports-car racing history, has been brought back to life as a handcrafted performance beauty for street or track. With an all-aluminum body, chrome-moly tube frame and a mountain of racing heritage, the classic roadster is being reproduced by Scarab Motorsports as an authentic continuation of the all-American sports racer that conquered the competition establishment in the late 1950s. The new Scarab is gorgeously rendered, updated where necessary for safety but still a near-exact replica of the legendary race car that absolutely dominated during its brief career. When equipped with period disc brakes and iron cylinder head engine, the Scarab has been approved by the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association for its vintage track events. Kansas-based Scarab Motorsports has produced 10 of the roadsters so far, with several more in the production now. Richard Kitzmiller, the president and founder who originally set out to recreate the race cars that he long admired, brought together other rabid motorsports enthusiasts to establish the new Scarab works. The first Scarab built by the company, painted in the striking blue-and-white livery originally designed by the famed Von Dutch, is on public display on the Scottsdale, Arizona showroom of Brighton Motorsports, which is also the exclusive worldwide marketer and distributor of the new Scarab. The original Scarab was the culmination of an obsessive racing dream by Lance Reventlow, heir to the Woolworth fortune. He was inspired to build his own race car after visiting the Lister-Jaguar factory in England, where he decided that he could create something better and in 1957 set up Scarab Automobiles in Venice, Calif. At the 1958 U.S. Grand Prix in Riverside, racer Chuck Daigh drove a Scarab to a resounding victory against some of the world’s fastest cars and best drivers. Famed driver Augie Pabst won numerous victories in a Scarab beginning in 1959, when influential Road & Track magazine featured the roadster on its cover and called it, “America’s Finest Sports Car.†One of the most impressive features of the new Scarab is its finely detailed aluminum bodywork. Significantly, the bodies are hand made by craftsmen in Europe, and their skill at rendering the complex aluminum forms is strikingly evident by the clean, seamless finish seen under the hood, fenders and tail section. The aluminum bodies are transported from Europe to Scarab Motorsports’ small factory near Kansas City, where the frames and running gear are built. The Scarabs are sold without engine or transmission. The typical prepared setup is a Chevy small block engine with period-inspired Hilborn electronic fuel injection and a 4 or 5 speed transmission. In most states, the Scarab can be registered as a 1958 car. By exotic car measure, the continuation Scarab is comparatively affordable, considering their crafted aluminum construction, hand-built frame and suspension, and top-notch components. Prices start at $79,750 for the “rolling chassis†– with many available options.
